50 Black LGBT People Every Black LGBT Youth Should Know #38 Kimberley McLeod

335853_862715084905_25169207_oWhen National Youth Pride Services went from regional to national black LGBT youth advocacy, who was the first person to put them on the map to the national media? It was the lovely Kimberley McLeod, now of the National Black Justice Coalition.

Now NYPS is covered almost daily by 61 local and national media outlets and 12 international sites. It also has an application for content provider for Wiki Queer. You can trace all that back to Kimberley.

• Oversees and coordinates media relations, communication strategies and social media networks

• Leads strategic communications planning around key events and opportunities to advance LGBT equality, especially in the African American community
• Remains abreast of current national legislative, policy and social justice issues related to LGBT equality and African American civil rights issues

Communities of African Descent Media Field Strategist

GLAAD

• Responsible for the organization’s outreach efforts and media strategy with statewide and local LGBT advocacy organizations and local and regional media outlets
• Work to build and sustain relationships with local LGBT and allied organizations to help enhance their work through media relations and media activism while furthering GLAAD’s mission and presence throughout the country
• Conduct media outreach, train spokespeople – particularly spokespeople of faith – and work hand-in-hand with African American LGBT organizations to bring visibility and media attention to issues facing the community.
