Reflections on Frank Oceans Grammy Awards

frank-oceanFrank Ocean had a good night at the 2013 Grammy Awards. There is no secret he received some attention for a letter he wrote about falling in love with someone of the same gender. He got much attention and applause from the LGBT community.

And of course some negative responses as well.

We asked a few artist who we feature on our Music Channel what they thought about Frank Ocean’s Grammy night:

“I think his sexuality got him the exposure, but it was the music that got him the Grammy. Good music deserves to be exploited, and not necessarily who someone happens to love” -Damien Crawford

“As an artist, dj, producer and songwriter it’s always amazing to watch and support our fellow artists shine. As an African American man it’s even more special to see someone who looks like me being

recognized for his creative pursuits. And particularly being an African American gay male, to witness Frank Ocean be so bold and free p it gives us hope that we can all come together to celebrate music and the arts despite our differences. This is truly a groundbreaking moment.” – Richie Skye

As a young, black, gay entertainer in today’s society I’m proud to see another peer (Frank Ocean) aligned with my

sexuality & field of work win a Grammy and to perform a song obviously pertaining to OUR community of love, makes me beyond inspired to go forward in this journey we call life.  2013 will be a year for the LGBT family to branch out t the masses in all fields!” – Brentley

“It’s amazing to see Frank, a black gay artist, walk on stage and accept a Grammy award! He is truly opening up doors for people like myself. He is breaking barriers that have never been broken in music history! It’s amazing!”  – Pierre Phipps of the Freaky Boiz

“It reassure’s me that we live in a different world. A different era…a new beginning. And I feel that he has opened doors for so many others.” – Ja Pan

“The industry is crazy for judging music off of a sexual preference. He’s a phenomenal artist and my favorite. It’s 2013. I don’t know how there is still so much discrimination in the world. It’s sickening.” – (ally) Dallas Wade

“I think Frank Ocean winning is the beginning of a new era of entertainment.

One where people could care less about your ethnicity, preference or anything else that could hold you back. It’s about the music. Not the entertainer’s personal life. I salute him.” -The Omni Rose

“Yesterday at the Grammy’s Frank Ocean’s win provided a ramp for other out gay musicians to challenge ourselves to step out of the box and lead without following. This is only the beginning for the community. 2013 will display and showcase what the LGBT community has to offer and indicate we have the ability to appeal to the masses.”  -Tonye
